You Gotta Go…Council to host comprehensive look at quality of life

Next week the Prince George’s County Council is going to take a look at the quality of life for residents. What makes this event different from others is how the council proposes to do it. Instead of looking at the different indicators of life in separate conversations, the county will start a daylong conversation with a Quality of Life Index at 2:30PM. After that the council, meeting as the Board of Health, will meet and look at a range of areas to improve the health of county residents. The day will conclude with a Public Safety Town Hall that evening at 7:00PM in the Council Chambers. All three forums are free and open to the public. They take place at the County Administration Building in Upper Marlboro.

Council’s July 1 Meeting Focuses on Quality of Life Indicators; Special Focus on Health and Public Safety

The Prince George’s County Council hosts a “Comprehensive Quality of Life Dialogue” on Tuesday, July 1, 2014. All of the day’s events will be held in the Council Hearing Room, First Floor, County Administration Building, 14741 Governor Oden Bowie Drive, in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.
Prince George’s County Council Chairman Mel Franklin (D) – District 9, says enhancing the Quality of Life for County residents is among the Council’s most essential duties.
“Improving our quality of life is critical to the County’s economic growth and prosperity. While this is certainly an ongoing conversation, the Council is committing this time to a targeted focus on quality of life issues including the state of our economy, healthcare, and public safety. We are coming together with community stakeholders to share important updates and discuss how we are performing as a community – what we are doing right, and what we can do better. We look forward to an informative day and lively dialogue, and we encourage our residents to join in the discussion.”
The dialogue begins with a 2:30 p.m. briefing on the Quality of Life Index presented by Greater Prince George’s Business Roundtable President and CEO M.H. Jim Estepp and Director of Operations James Estepp. The Quality of Life Index, developed by the Greater Prince George’s Business Roundtable, uses facts and figures to determine where Prince George’s County stands – relative to neighboring jurisdictions and historical data – in the areas of education, public safety, health, transportation, parks and recreation, and the economy.
The Council convenes as the Board of Health at 4:00 p.m. for presentations focusing on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Food Deserts:  A Public Health Approach to Nutritional Challenges in Our Community, led by Prince George’s County Health Officer Pamela Creekmur, RN.    Greater Baden Medical Services and the County’s Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) System will be the subject of a presentation by Greater Baden’s Chief Executive Officer Colenthia Malloy, and Chief Medical Officer Samuel Croff, MD.   Additionally, Board of Health consultant Joseph Wright, MD, MPH and Health Officer Creekmur will provide an update on the 2014 County Health Rankings.
The final event of the day is the Council’s Town Hall Meeting on Public Safety, “Building On Our Successes: Making Prince George’s County an Even Safer Community,” from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.  Featured presenters include State’s Attorney Angela Alsobrooks; Prince George’s County Office of Homeland Security Director Brian R. Moe; Prince George’s County Police Chief Mark Magaw; Prince George’s County Fire Chief Mark S. Bashoor; Prince George’s County Sheriff Melvin High; and Prince George’s County Department of Corrections Director Mary Lou McDonough. Citizens will also have an opportunity to participate in a question and answer session, and share their thoughts on issues of community concern with the County’s top public safety officials.
